The State of Colorado’s Marijuana Enforcement Division, or MED for short, released on Monday, March 12, 2018 information and imagery for a new unified symbol that will be included on all packaging of retail and medicinal marijuana products sold legally within the state.
This change aims to further protect public health and safety according to Colorado Department of Revenue Executive Director Michael Hartman who oversees the Marijuana Enforcement Division for the state. “One truly universal symbol works to simplify and improve industry compliance with regard to packaging and labeling,” said Hartman. He feels that identifying products containing marijuana is important and the distinct symbols will work to help with that.
This new universal symbol from the Marijuana Enforcement Division was developed together with Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) after an extensive review was done of the existing labeling requirements in place and significant conversations with stakeholders throughout the industry during rule making.
“Whether it’s used on retail or medical marijuana products, the universal symbol helps both consumers and non-consumers easily identify that a product contains THC and avoid unintentional ingestion,” said Karin McGowan, CDPHE’s Deputy Executive Director. “We’re confident that the integration of a single symbol will help streamline our public health message, which focuses on the importance of educating yourself, young people, and out-of-town guests about what the symbol means.”
